BK Delivers Pizza Burger in NYCBy Todd • Sep 13th, 2010 • Category: Burger Blog
In January, when we first told you about Burger King’s idea for a burgers n’ beers joint called the Whopper Bar, we knew that the plans included regional variations on the signature sandwich, cold beer served in aluminum bottles, and a target clientele of young urban hipsters and wide-eyed tourists in big-city hotspots like Vegas, South Beach, and Manhattan. But there was nary a whiff of this:
That is the NY Pizza Burger, unveiled by the Times Square Whopper Bar a few weeks ago. Not a pizza meant to invoke the taste of a cheeseburger, this is just the opposite. It’s made up of four Whopper patties which are topped with pepperoni, mozzarella, marinara sauce, and a Tuscan-styled pesto mayonnaise, all tucked into a sesame seed bun measuring nine and a half inches across and served in a pizza box.
While the mainstream media is having a field day with the news, touting the calorie count (2500+) as just the latest implement of fat-laden evil that Americans are using to slowly commit suicide (“It’s like eating 3 sticks of butter!” “It’s the same as inhaling 42 slices of American cheese!”), what no one seems to be pointing out is that the $12.99 NY Pizza Burger is cut into six slices and meant to be shared… just like an authentic New York-style pie. Each wedge weighs in at just 400 calories: 270 less than a regular Whopper! This is 4 cheeseburgers being split by 6 people… why is everyone getting their panties in a bunch?!?
Forget calories, what chowhounds really want to know is: how does the NY Pizza Burger taste? Well, as of now, it’s exclusive to the Times Square Whopper Bar, so relatively few folks have actually tried it. From those that have, reviews have been mixed. While some describe it as the perfect hybrid of burger and pizza, others claim that it’s nothing like either food group. Some have compared its taste to a giant meatball sub. But another sampler says the primary sensation is an overload of oregano and bread. Some are so crazy about the Tuscan herb sauce that they’re already lobbying the King to offer it at all locations as a burger topping or dipping sauce for fries.
BK’s Whopper Bar specializes in whacked-out versions of the Whopper, including the Bourbon Whopper (cheddar, bacon, onion rings, bourbon-flavored sauce), the Meat Beast Whopper (pepperoni and bacon), and their best-seller, the California Whopper (Swiss, bacon, guacamole). Customers can build their own Whopper by choosing from 18 different toppings… and they can do it anytime day or night, thanks to 24/7 hours.
So will the NY Pizza Burger prove to be an extra-large success… or just a flash in the deep-dish pan? What do you think, burgermeisters? Would it be worth a try on your next trip to the Big Apple?
