BK Introduces “Stuffed” Cheeseburgers

The fine folks over at Burger Business predicted back in November that 2011 would be the “Year of the Stuffed Burger.” Less than 2 weeks in, it already seems they may be right.  Burger King has announced that they’ll be rolling out the Jalapeno & Cheddar BK Stuffed Steakhouse Burger in select markets as a limited-time-only offering.  Here’s the official close-up mug shot from Business Wire:

With a tagline of, “In it.  Not on it,” the chain will be the first of the major burgermeisters to try a stuffed burger, thanks to the flexible batch broilers that were put into its kitchens last year.  The cheeseburger features bits of jalapeno peppers and cheddar cheese inside the flame-broiled patty, with a creamy poblano sauce, ripe tomatoes, and crisp lettuce encased in a premium bakery bun.  “We know that [our customers] enjoy the bold combination of spicy and cheesy in a big way,” Jonathan Muhtar, Burger King Corp.’s VP of global marketing and innovation, said in a statement.  “With our first ever stuffed sandwich, we’re giving our guests what they want – juicy 100-percent beef infused with jalapenos and cheddar for an experience you can see and taste in every bite.”  The suggested price tag for this bad boy will be $3.99, with nationwide ads debuting on January 17.

All of that sounds more than mildly interesting.  But check this out, from the Indy Grub Review:

Eww. That’s a half-eaten Jalapeno & Cheddar BK Stuffed Steakhouse from back in August.  Seems Indianapolis was a test market for the sammie, and that’s the proof, test-driven by the site’s anonymous blogger way before anyone else even knew it was coming.  He scored it at 3 out of 5, but I’m not sure that picture helps sell me.  And I’m a BK fan.  In fact, I think I have a larger issue with the whole thing.  I think it’s the name, actually.  The word “stuffed,” to me, conjures up a very specific image.  Something like this:

That’s a Jucy Lucy from off my own backyard grill.  The cheese is fully encased in meat.  THAT’s a stuffed burger.  Mixing bits of ingredients in with the beef isn’t “stuffing” the burger at all.  If you ask me, what the King is getting ready to serve up isn’t “stuffed” so much as it’s “studded.” Granted, the Jalapeno & Cheddar BK Studded Steakhouse sounds a little weird, but it’s more accurate.  And let’s face it, BK could have a blast with the TV ads for a burger with the word “studded” in the name.  (But who am I kidding?  I’ll end up trying one.)  2011 may well turn out to be the Year of the Stuffed Burger.  But I’m not sure BK’s latest menu item should count.

    Todd…that stuffed burger you made…that made my heart skip. Not sure if it was the because of the potential clogged artery or just lust.

    I think it was lust though. You do know your burger and more importantly who to photograph then. Now I find you make then like you want to find them.

    Is there any end to this madness?
