Kobayashi Downs 93 Krystals in Square Off VI

Competitive eating’s Beast from the East is back.  Takeru Kobayashi destroyed the field in Chattanooga this past weekend to win the Krystal Square Off World Hamburger Eating Championship in decisive fashion.  “The Tsunami” wolfed down 93 Krystals in eight minutes flat to claim his fourth Krystal belt.

And lest you blow this off as was some lame stunt akin to a wacky morning radio show contest for Nickelback tickets, wrap your head around this: the event was televised live on the SportSouth network and drew more than 10,000 people.  In fact, the crowd was larger than the one attending Tuesday night’s Major League Baseball game between the Baltimore Orioles and the Tampa Bay Rays.  And this was to watch 12 people eat little tiny hamburgers.

Krystal Square Off VI was a showdown between Kobayashi, the sport’s biggest superstar and winner of the first three Square Offs, and defending champ Joey Chestnut, who won Square Off IV and then set a world record in Square Off V when he devoured 103 Krystals in 8 minutes.

This year’s event introduced two new rules that brought that burger tally down.  First, no dunking.  Second, each eater was given 5 of Krystal’s Big Angus burgers to start the competition, with each one counting as 5 regular Krystal slyders.  (I use that term generically; Krystal doesn’t call their burger a slyder.  That connotation seems to be pretty-universally reserved for the chain’s northern predecessor, White Castle.  And, when spelled with an “i,” for the millions of restaurants these days that feel compelled to offer some silly cutesy-pie mini-burger sampler platter for reasons I don’t quite grasp.)

Kobayashi ate 68 Krystals and 5 Big Angus Burgers; Chestnut polished off 56 and 5, respectively.  For his efforts, the faux-hawked Kobayashi pocketed the championship belt, a crystal trophy, and a $20,000 cash prize.  Not bad for 8 minutes of work.
