Legendary NFL Coach Joins Burger Blitz

By • Mar 24th, 2011 • Category: Burger Blog

The latest player in the ever-growing burger biz already has 347 wins under his belt… in the NFL. Don Shula, who coached the Miami Dolphins to two Super Bowl victories and then went on to launch a chain of high-end steakhouses, has announced that he’s getting into the burger business with a new venture called (unimaginatively) Shula Burger.

We have been working on Shula Burger for two years,” Shula said in a press release. “We think that this will be a highly successful concept.” Right now, it’s just that- a concept- with the coach looking for franchisees to open 100 locations inside of five years. The first is slated to kick off this June in Islamorda in the Florida Keys. The planned look for Shula Burger is described as a gourmet take on fast-casual and is somewhat understated when compared to the upscale steakhouse theme, with insiders likening the vibe to Chipotle Mexican Grill or Pei Wei Asian Diner.

The 6-ounce patties handed off here will be a blend of Angus chuck, short rib, and brisket, according to Shula Burger president Bill Herman. The company has released the following photograph of a sample burger, but I can’t seem to find any confirmation on whether the chain’s logo will actually be branded into the side of the bun thusly:

An early look at the menu shows a half-dozen-plus “signature creations” with a variety of toppings (some seem awfully fancy… fresh goat cheese, anyone?) but are priced at under 8 bucks. There’s also a build-your-own menu that allows diners to customize their burg to offensive-lineman proportions. “The Don” is listed as a burger-and-hot-dog combo sandwich that’s sure to get hungry fans’ attention. There’s also chicken sammies, a steak sandwich, a hot dog, and a handful of salads offered on the menu, which feels largely like that of a lunch kind of place.

Shula may be a newcomer to the burger game, but the coach has a well-established name in the restaurant biz, with Shula’s Steak House, Shula’s 2 Steak & Sports, Shula’s on the Beach, and Shula’s 347 Grill: 32 full-service restaurants spread across 16 states. “We’re not a startup. We’re a successful restaurant company,” Herman says. “We have a name, the Shula name. And we know beef.

What do you say, Cheeseburger Nation? Is there room on the burger landscape for another gourmet/fast-casual burger chain? Does the name Don Shula carry any weight or help convince you that Shula Burger will be anything half as special as his undefeated 1972 Dolphins team?
