Carl’s Jr. Unveils Grilled Cheese Bacon Burger

By • Feb 2nd, 2010 • Category: Burger Blog

Start a list of ultimate “comfort foods.”  How soon do you get to “grilled cheese sandwich?”  Top 10?  Top 5?  Maybe even sooner?  The burgermeisters at Carl’s Jr. must think so, too, based on their latest cheeseburger offering, the Grilled Cheese Bacon Burger:

That’s 4 gooey slices of melted American and Swiss cheeses, bacon, mayo, and a juicy charbroiled burger patty, all presented between slices of grilled sourdough bread.  (It’s okay.  Take a moment.  I’ll be here when you get back.)

“The origin of the new Grilled Cheese Bacon Burgers is actually kind of a funny story,” according to Brad Haley, executive VP of marketing at CKE Restaurants (parent company). “We were initially working on menu items we could offer for our vegetarian customers and made a really good grilled cheese sandwich.  But, being Carl’s Jr., a chain known for its decadent burgers, someone suggested that we try it with a charbroiled burger patty and bacon for our carnivorous customers and the Grilled Cheese Bacon Burgers were born… It really delivers on the idea of a grilled cheese sandwich combined with a bacon cheeseburger… And we’ll still make a really good grilled cheese sandwich for our vegetarian customers if they want one.”

True to their word, for $1.69, Carl’s Jr. will 86 the bacon and the burger if you specify that they “veg it.”  For us meat-eaters, the Grilled Cheese Bacon Burger is available as a single ($2.49), a double ($3.49), or with Black Angus beef a la their Six-Dollar Burgers ($4.49).

Many of us in Burger Nation may be left high and dry, however. Carl’s Jr. has locations in 14 Western states only.  For those of you in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming who are interested in chowing down on the new burg, download a coupon here for a buck off a combo, good until April 7.

Hardee’s, Carl’s sister chain, has not announced any plans to offer the Grilled Cheese Bacon Burger in the other 36 states.  Looks like until they do, if I want a burger/grilled cheese mashup, I’ll have to “settle” for one of these.
