World’s Largest McDonald’s Coming to London OlympicsBy Todd • Jul 22nd, 2011 • Category: Burger Blog
The official motto of the Olympic Games is, “Citius, Altius, Fortius.” That’s, “Swifter, Higher, Stronger” for you Latin nerds. Well, the burger barons at McDonald’s have now added “Bigger” to that creed. The longtime Olympic sponsor will have a major presence at the 2012 Summer Games in London by building the world’s largest McDonald’s.
There will be four McDonald’s locations within the Olympic Park in Stratford, east London- two for spectators, one in the media center, and one in the Athletes’ Village. But the one everyone will be talking about is the supersized two-story restaurant that will occupy a 32,000 square-foot footprint and seat 1,500 at a time. (Those numbers put this “burger joint” at about ten TIMES the size of a typical London restaurant.)
McDonald’s UK chief executive Jill McDonald (no kidding!) said of the announcement, which was accompanied by the artists’ renderings seen here,”To be involved in the greatest sporting event on earth is hugely exciting, and we are delighted to be able to celebrate one year to go by showcasing these plans. Visiting McDonald’s is fun, and the design and graphics in these restaurants will take that to new heights. We want everyone who visits our Olympic Park restaurants to have the best possible customer experience and are confident that the look and feel of these cutting-edge designs will provide that environment.”
Not only will this Mickey D’s be the biggest, it will also be the most diverse, with a menu that will reportedly offer Happy Meals with fruit, vegetable, and dairy options, as well as porridge… for that true taste of Britain. This “Big Mac” of a storefront is expected to serve 1.75 million meals during the 29 days of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
And the kitchen staff scrambling to assemble those cheeseburgers, salt those fries, and hash those browns won’t be pimply-faced newbies learning on the McJob. The fast food giant will be importing their own all-star team: 2,000 top-performing front-line employees from the UK and around the world will get the honor of waiting on the world at the London Games. After the closing ceremonies, the furniture and kitchens- already made from largely recycled materials- will be dismantled and recycled again in other restaurants around the UK.
Of course, not everyone is excited about the clown’s Olympic-sized presence at the London Games. The British Medical Association has offered a predictably sour opinion. “Given many countries in the developed world, and some in the developing world, are facing a major problem with obesity, it is unfortunate that McDonald’s are major sponsors at the 2012 London Olympics,” their statement read. And one of parliament’s health committee members said in a statement of his own: “Given the huge public health issues of childhood obesity, it is legitimate to question whether having the world’s biggest McDonald’s at the Olympic Park is sending an appropriate message to our young people.”
Nevertheless, it seems that Olympic fans traveling to London in 2012 will be able to go for the gold- and a Quarter Pounder- like never before.
